In the beginning there was hardware. We would buy rack servers from vendors and put them in our data centres. Then came virtualisation, and we would run hypervisors on our hardware to provision VMs. In the cloud we could provision VMs even faster.Now, while we're in the middle of The Great Containerisation, with more and more companies adopting Docker and other container technologies, another option is gaining attention: Serverless.

Working in Web Development, we speak a language of jargon and acronyms; but take a look at Amazon Web Services (AWS), and even the most hardened Jargonista or Acronymite might quail at the plethora of obscurity and abbreviation that Amazon wrap around their cloud services. Looking at the control panel is a maze of arcane vernacular, and wading through the documentation can be as daunting as deciphering ancient alchemic journals.
